    Fungus

Fungus is the first folk rock band in the Netherlands. The band was founded in 1972 and stopped in 1979, and is best known for having a big hit with the sailor song Kaap'ren sailing. In 1972, Fungus was founded in Vlaardingen by Fred Piek and Bob Dekenga, and a little later supplemented by Kees Maat. In 1973, Sido Martens and Koos Pakvis joined the band, while Dekenga left the group. Initially the group played Anglo-Saxon folk, but after Piek had studied the home recordings of field worker Ate Doornbosch, compiler of the NOS radio program Onder de Groene Linde, a first album was released in 1974 with half English and half Dutch traditional music. , including the hit single Kaap'ren sailing. Folk purists vilified Fungus' approach, with electric amplification and sharp guitar solos. According to their own words, Fungus never pretended to make folk music, but saw themselves mainly as a pop band. In 1974, Louis Debij joined the group, and Dekenga returned as Maat's replacement, before leaving the group permanently in 1976. In 1975, Martens had already left the group and was replaced by Rens van der Zalm (later also Wolverlei). Fungus' second album (1975) and third album (1976) contain exclusively Dutch traditional music, but the fourth album (1977) contains only British traditional music. After Debij left Fungus in 1978, only Piek, Pakvis and Van der Zalm were left, and it was decided to disband the band at the end of that year. In 1979 a sixth album was released, containing half English and half Dutch traditional music. In 1984 there was a one-off reunion concert and in 2000 a compilation album on 2 CDs was released. Fungus even gave a few concerts again in a new line-up. In any case, Fred Piek, Sido Martens and Louis Debij were present from the original line-up.(from Wikipedia) .
