Japandroids

Japandroids are a Canadian rock duo from Vancouver, British Columbia, formed in 2006 by vocalist and guitarist Brian King and drummer David Prowse. As a two-piece, the band built a sound of extraordinary density — guitars layered and distorted to fill the sonic space left by the absent bass, drums played with maximum force, and vocals shouted with desperate enthusiasm. Their music is unambiguously celebratory, fixated on youth, friendship, and the feeling of being alive. Post-Nothing (2009), their debut full-length, arrived to enormous critical enthusiasm — Pitchfork gave it Best New Music and it landed on year-end lists worldwide. The record's straightforward, euphoric energy felt like a necessary corrective to the dominant irony of the era. Celebration Rock (2012) refined and perfected the formula, opening with literal fireworks and sustaining that energy across eight songs of anthemic, maximum-volume indie rock. It was widely named one of the best rock records of the decade. Near to the Wild Heart of Life (2017), their third and final album, took a somewhat more considered approach while retaining the duo's commitment to big emotion and loud guitars. The band went on indefinite hiatus in 2018, with both members citing exhaustion and the difficulty of sustaining the project long-term. In a career spanning just over a decade and three studio albums, Japandroids produced one of the most purely joyful catalogues in modern indie rock. Their influence on subsequent guitar bands has been considerable, and Celebration Rock in particular remains a defining document of early-2010s indie.
