Larry Chance was a singer and bandleader who helped keep doo-wop music alive for decades. His career began in 1957, when he and some friends from the Bronx formed the vocal group that would become The Earls. He had several hits in the early 1960s, such as “Life Is But a Dream”, “Never” and “Remember Then”, which became doo-wop classics. He also changed his name from Lawrence Figueiredo to Larry Chance at the suggestion of his record producer. He was a versatile entertainer who also wrote songs, performed comedy and voiced radio characters. He adapted to the changing music scene by briefly becoming a rhythm-and-blues band called Smokestack in the 1970s, and then resumed performing as the Earls during the doo-wop revival. He continued to sing until his death in 2023 at the age of 82. He was one of the most enduring and influential figures of the doo-wop era.
