Mac Demarco

Mac DeMarco is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV in 1990 in Duncan, British Columbia. One of the most beloved and prolific figures in indie rock and lo-fi pop of the 2010s, he built a devoted cult following through a particular combination of hazy, jangle-guitar warmth, self-deprecating humour, and an almost wilfully casual approach to recording that produced some of the decade's most infectious and emotionally honest music. Having released early recordings under the name Makeout Videotape — particularly the EP *Bedroom Rockstar* — DeMarco signed to Captured Tracks and released his debut *2* (2012), which established his signature sound: slack, chorus-drenched guitar melodies, low-tempo grooves, and a laconic vocal delivery that suggested someone perpetually half-asleep but deeply feeling. 'Ode to Viceroy' and 'Freaking Out the Neighborhood' became immediate indie anthems. *Salad Days* (2014) was a more polished but still unhurried refinement, dealing with burnout and creative anxiety beneath its sunny surfaces, and became his commercial breakthrough. 'Passing Out Pieces,' 'Let Her Go,' and the title track were career highlights. *Another One* (2015) was a mini-album of tender, compact love songs dedicated to his girlfriend, distributed with his home address as an open invitation — fans arriving at his door became part of his mythology. *This Old Dog* (2017) was more emotionally exposed, dealing with his absent father, and *Here Comes the Cowboy* (2019) pushed into more experimental, minimal territory. *Five Easy Hot Dogs* (2023), a wordless instrumental road trip album, demonstrated his continued refusal to settle into predictability. DeMarco's ramshackle live shows — extended improvisations, audience participation, his band's gleefully unprofessional energy — became as central to his appeal as his recordings, and his influence on bedroom pop and indie aesthetics has been substantial.
