American psych-prog-fusion group from Boston area, active in early 70s.
Osmosis was a seven-piece group fronted by the legendary saxophonist and flautist Charlie Mariano and also featured Bobby Knox (vocals), Andy Steinborn (lead guitar), Danny Comfort (bass), Charlie Bechler (keyboards), Lou Peterson (drums) and Bobby Clark (drums, percussion). After various gigs around New England, Chicago and New York City - they was the 1st jazz-rock band to play at the fabled the Village Vanguard - the group caught the interest of several record companies, including Atlantic and Capitol. In the end in 1970 the RCA Records signed the band, thanks to a connection of Charlie Mariano with the major label. Short afterwards they entered RCA's Studio B in NYC, where in just eight hours and with the very conflicting production of David Blume the band recorded their debut album. It was released in 1970 and secured a US tour notably supporting Miles Davis. But when Charlie Mariano decided he'd go in Europe, Osmosis fell into a deep crisis that led to the dissolution, after their last gig at the Jazz Workshop in Boston with George Benson.
