Phantogram

Phantogram are an American synth-pop and electronic rock duo from Staten Island, New York, formed in 2007 by multi-instrumentalists Josh Carter and Sarah Beth Durst. Beginning as an electronic duo working with drum machines and synthesizers, Phantogram developed a sound that merged dark, atmospheric synth-pop with ominous production and guitar textures, creating an aesthetic both futuristic and decidedly earthbound. Ekstasis (2009) and Nightlife (2012) built a devoted underground following. Voices (2014), their major label debut on RCA Records, produced the single Fall in Love and reached number 17 on the Billboard Alternative chart. The album's tighter, more polished approach achieved their widest audience while retaining the distinctive character of their earlier work. Three (2016) continued to refine their pop sensibilities, though never at the expense of their darker aesthetic. Ceremony (2021) showed the duo evolving further, incorporating live instrumentation and a warmer production approach while maintaining their signature synth-based architecture. Phantogram have built a loyal fanbase through consistent touring and a distinct visual and sonic aesthetic that has influenced subsequent electronic and alternative pop acts. Their music balances pop accessibility with genuine experimental impulse.
