About

Phosphorescent is the project of singer-songwriter Matthew Houck, born in Alabama and raised in Athens, Georgia. Beginning as a lo-fi folk project in the early 2000s, Phosphorescent evolved into something more ambitious and expansive over the course of a decade, incorporating country, soul, psychedelia, and cosmic Americana into an increasingly rich and personal musical universe. A Series of Sneaks (2003) and Aw Come Aw Wry (2005) established the project's intimate, homespun character. Pride (2007) was a tribute To Willie Nelson that demonstrated Houck's deep roots in American country music. To Willie (2010) and Here's To Taking It Easy (2010) continued to develop this thread, with the latter earning considerable critical praise. Muchacho (2013) was the breakthrough record — a lush, enveloping album recorded largely in Mexico City following personal upheaval, featuring the luminous single Song For Zula. It was widely named one of the best albums of the year and introduced Phosphorescent to a significantly wider audience. The album's fusion of classic country, soul, and contemporary production stood apart from most of its contemporaries. C'est La Vie (2018), recorded in Nashville with Houck's partner and collaborator Joy Kills Sorrow bassist Maria Usbeck, was a warmer, more domestic record that reflected a more settled period in his life. Phosphorescent's catalogue is defined by emotional honesty, sonic curiosity, and a deep engagement with American musical tradition.
