Rikki Ililonga

Rikezo Makuyu "Rikki" Ililonga (born February 9, 1949) is a Zambian musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who was a key figure in the "Zamrock" scene of the 1970s. Born in the Zambezi District of Zambia’s Northwestern Province and raised in the Copperbelt, he began his musical training on the banjo before transitioning to the guitar in his late teens. In the late 1960s, he traveled to the United States to attend Syracuse University in New York for a political education course sponsored by the United National Independence Party (UNIP), an experience that heavily influenced the lyrical themes of his later work.

Ililonga’s professional career began in the early 1970s as a founding member and lead guitarist of the band Musi O Tunya. After performing in Zambia, the group relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, where they recorded the 1974 album [m494548], notable for its blend of psychedelic rock, funk, and traditional rhythms. In 1975, Ililonga left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut album, [m927168], at [l100794] in Nairobi. On this and subsequent solo records, he functioned as a multi-instrumentalist, often performing nearly all the guitar, bass, and drum parts himself. His music was characterized by a fusion of Western rock influences with Zambian styles, featuring lyrics in English, Lozi, and Bemba.

In 1980, amid a downturn in the Zambian music industry, Ililonga relocated to Denmark. He continued to work in music while abroad and later participated in [r32719122], a musical collaboration with former president Kenneth Kaunda focused on HIV/AIDS awareness. Following the rise of interest in Zamrock in the 2010s, Ililonga’s discography experienced significant international attention, leading to a series of archival reissues of his catalog by [l30886].
