British-Nigerian singer / songwriter, most famous for fronting the Sade band. Born 16 January 1959 in Ibadan, Nigeria, she moved to Clacton-on-Sea, England, aged 4 after her parents separated.
She studied fashion design in London and worked as a model before entering the music business in 1980. At age 17 she was playing the harmonica and did vocals with bands named Arriva and Pride, who never released anything. In 1983 her singing was discovered by an impresario while working at a street stall in the Camden market. They formed a band named Folasade but later shortened the name to Sade and gained worldwide recognition.
