The Fray

The Fray are a Rock band formed in Denver, Colorado in 2002, led by vocalist and pianist Isaac Slade alongside guitarist Joe King, drummer Ben Wysocki, and keyboardist Dave Welsh. Known for their piano-driven Alternative rock and emotionally direct ballads, they achieved significant mainstream success in the mid-2000s with a sound rooted in confessional songwriting and anthemic arrangements that earned extensive film and television placement. Their debut album *How to Save a Life* (2005) became one of the decade's most commercially successful alternative rock records, driven by the title track — a song about a counsellor's attempt to help a troubled teenager that became ubiquitous through its use in *Grey's Anatomy* and numerous other television programmes. The song spent over two years on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over five million copies, introducing The Fray to a massive mainstream audience. 'Over My Head (Cable Car)' was another substantial hit from the same album. Self-titled second album *The Fray* (2009) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced 'You Found Me,' a searching song about faith and disappointment that continued their run of emotionally resonant piano-rock hits. *Scars & Stories* (2012) incorporated broader production influences including strings and gospel choir elements. Slade's piano playing — rooted in gospel and classical training — gave The Fray a sonic signature distinct from most guitar-based alternative rock of their era, while his lyrical preoccupation with relationships, loss, and faith connected them to a large audience seeking emotionally uncomplicated but genuinely felt songwriting. Though their commercial peak was relatively brief, 'How to Save a Life' remains one of the most enduring pop-rock songs of the 2000s and a touchstone of a particular strand of confessional piano rock that influenced numerous subsequent acts.
