British post-punk power trio founded in end-1988 / beginning of 1989 and split in 1991.
The band started at the initiative of Mick Hobbs (ex The Work & Officer!) who wanted a trio that would emphasize his bandmate Tim Hodgkinson's (also in The Work) technique on Hawaian laptop guitar. The two decided to hire Andy Wake, after he'd drummed with Officer! on a European tour. Originally the trio used the name "Mome Raths" (after characters from Lewis Carroll' poem "The Jabberwocky"), but that was soon shortened to "The Momes" which is French slang for 'street kids'.
The band toured Western Europe from February to July 1989, after which they went into Cold Storage studio for two days to record the material of their sole album 'Spiralling'.
After the recording, The Momes went into remission while Andy Wake went to Java to study gamelan. He was there for a year during which The Work had reconvened, so when Andy returned he found Mick and Tim pretty busy. But the Momes still managed to do another couple of tours before they split following shows in Germany in February and March 1991. The trio never had the chance to make it back to the studio to record another LP, although it seems as though enough songs probably existed.
