Weezer

Weezer are a rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1992, built around the songwriting of vocalist and guitarist Rivers Cuomo alongside guitarist Brian Bell, bassist Matt Sharp (later Scott Shriner), and drummer Patrick Wilson. One of the defining acts of 1990s alternative rock and power pop, their debut album established a template that influenced a generation of guitar bands — nerdy, self-deprecating, melodically irresistible, and underpinned by a surprising emotional vulnerability. The self-titled debut — universally known as the Blue Album (1994), produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars — was a landmark of pristine, hook-saturated alternative rock. 'Buddy Holly,' 'Undone – The Sweater Song,' and 'Say It Ain't So' were all hit singles, but the album's genius lay in how Cuomo married crunching loud-quiet guitar dynamics with Beach Boys harmonies and confessional lyrics about isolation and longing. Its follow-up, *Pinkerton* (1996), was rawer and more emotionally exposed — a lo-fi, almost hardcore-adjacent record about obsession and self-loathing that was critically dismissed on release but subsequently recognised as one of the most influential alternative albums of its decade, a touchstone for emo and indie rock across the 2000s. After a lengthy hiatus, the Green Album (2001) and Maladroit (2002) returned with polished if less revelatory power pop, and the band's output across the 2000s was inconsistent — *Make Believe* (2005), *The Red Album* (2008), *Raditude* (2009) — though each found its passionate defenders among their devoted fanbase. *Everything Will Be Alright In The End* (2014) and *The White Album* (2016) were widely regarded as significant creative revivals, the latter in particular earning their strongest reviews since *Pinkerton*. *Pacific Daydream* (2017) and *The Black Album* (2019) continued an era of prolific activity, and *Van Weezer* (2021) — a deliberate hard rock homage — alongside *SZNZ* (2022), a four-season EP cycle, demonstrated Cuomo's restless curiosity. Weezer's influence on alternative rock, emo, and internet fan culture has been extraordinary and enduring. Their Reddit-driven resurgence and the viral 'Africa' cover demonstrated an unusual capacity for cultural renewal decades into their career.
