Wheatus

Wheatus are an American rock band from Levittown, New York, formed in 1995 and centred on vocalist, guitarist, and producer Brendan B. Brown. The band achieved international fame through one of the defining pop-punk moments of the early 2000s before retreating to a cult following that has proved remarkably loyal. Wheatus (2000), their self-titled debut on Columbia Records, produced Teenage Dirtbag — a three-chord power pop song about teenage social anxiety and a secret admiration for a girl out of reach, with a hook of disarming directness and a surprisingly touching narrative twist. The song was a major hit across Europe and Australia and appeared on the American Pie 2 soundtrack, becoming one of the most recognisable songs of the year. A Little Respect, a cover of the Erasure song, was also a hit. The commercial moment passed quickly after the debut, and subsequent records on independent labels — including Hand Over Your Loved Ones (2003), Suck Fony (2003), and a series of self-released albums — found Brown maintaining the project with a small but devoted fan base and a notably open relationship with his audience, releasing music directly and touring steadily. Teenage Dirtbag has endured in popular culture across more than two decades — in film, television, and online video — introducing successive generations to the song and sustaining Wheatus's audience far beyond what their commercial career alone would suggest. Brown continues to tour and record independently.
