Wilton Crump, born in 1949, formed the Mellowtones about a year after getting a guitar for his 11th birthday. As sole vocalist, and guitarist (the trio also included his cousin John Hilson and future jazz sideman Erv Bates), Crump led the group to the top of the teen band heap, in Gary, Indiana, USA. In 1967, Crump left Gary to study music theory and education at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. He only released one single.
