Childish Gambino

About

Childish Gambino is the musical project of Donald Glover, a multi-disciplinary artist born in 1983 in Edwards Air Force Base, California, who has also established parallel careers as an actor, writer, comedian, and filmmaker. Under the Childish Gambino moniker he has produced one of the most eclectic and critically lauded catalogues in contemporary Black American music, moving fluidly between introspective rap, neo-soul, funk, and experimental R&B. Early mixtapes *Culdesac* (2010) and *Camp* (2011) introduced his rapping style — emotionally confessional, lyrically dense, and prone to vulnerability in ways that felt distinct from dominant hip-hop norms. *Because the Internet* (2013), accompanied by a screenplay and developed as a multimedia concept piece, was a more ambitious, genre-blurring production exploring internet-age alienation and identity, featuring guest appearances and production from producers like Ludwig Göransson. The shift toward live-band funk and R&B arrived with *STN MTN/Kauai* (2014) and the mixtape *Kauai*, then full realised on *Awaken, My Love!* (2016), a stunning departure that abandoned rap almost entirely in favour of psychedelic funk, soul, and raw vocal performances indebted to George Clinton, Sly Stone, and early Prince. 'Redbone' became one of the decade's most widely heard songs. *'This Is America'* (2018) — released as a standalone single alongside a directorial debut music video — became a cultural flashpoint, its dissonant juxtaposition of minstrel imagery and mass-shooting commentary generating an immediate and sustained critical conversation about race and violence in the United States. *3.15.20* (2020) continued his experimental direction with ambient, largely un-titled tracks. Donald Glover's multifaceted career, which includes creating and starring in the acclaimed television series *Atlanta*, makes Childish Gambino one of the most significant creative voices of his generation.
