Gorillaz

Gorillaz are a virtual band and multimedia project created by Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett in 1998, presented through four animated band members — vocalist 2-D, bassist Murdoc Niccals, guitarist Noodle, and drummer Russel Hobbs — whose backstory, visual world, and interviews have been as carefully constructed as the music itself. One of the most ambitious and consistently rewarding projects in contemporary popular music, they have produced six studio albums of extraordinary stylistic variety, each enlisting a different roster of collaborators to create a fresh sonic identity. Albarn — the Blur vocalist and creative force — and Hewlett — Tank Girl co-creator and one of comics' most distinctive visual voices — conceived the project as a critique of celebrity and image-making in music, creating virtual musicians as a commentary on the constructed nature of pop stardom. The debut single 'Clint Eastwood' (2001), featuring Del tha Funky Homosapien, was an immediate hit, and the self-titled debut album (2001) established the project's genre-fluid template: hip-hop, electronic music, dub, post-punk, and pop combined with guest vocalists from across musical traditions. *Demon Days* (2005), produced with Danger Mouse and featuring De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Dennis Hopper, and Shaun Ryder among others, was their masterwork — a cohesive, politically engaged concept album producing 'Feel Good Inc.,' 'Dare,' 'Dirty Harry,' and 'DARE,' each a different genre exercise of genuine quality. It won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. *Plastic Beach* (2010), *Humanz* (2017, recorded in anticipation of a Trump election victory), *The Now Now* (2018, a quieter solo-Albarn record), and *Song Machine, Season One* (2020, a series of singles released monthly) have each found different registers. *Cracker Island* (2023) continued the run. Albarn's willingness to collaborate across genre and generation — working with hip-hop acts, electronic producers, West African musicians, and pop artists — has given the Gorillaz project an unusual longevity and cultural breadth.
